2nd Grade Math Playground Games
It can be difficult to captivate a second-grader’s mind these days just with lectures and pen and paper exercises. Kids in the modern day get a lot of their mental and visual stimulation out of digital media; for teachers and parents homeschooling their little learners, it can be helpful to go with the flow and use digital technology to reinforce a child’s comprehension of their math lessons.
Gadgets such as smartphones and tablets can open a whole new world of passive entertainment – which isn’t exactly the best thing to offer an impressionable and developing young mind. Children at this grade level are at a wonderful age to soak in a lot of information and practical skills to serve them as they grow older. For your learners, we’ve created these 2nd grade math playground games as suitable alternatives to the mind-numbing distractions that can otherwise be found online.
These games are designed to closely follow the kinds of games that second-graders like joining in the playground, as well as classic game mechanics that even you might be familiar with, such as Chutes and Ladders. By using tried-and-tested staples, our games can be easy to understand and play.
Few games can beat the popularity and timelessness of Chutes and Ladders. This page contains several games largely based on the board game’s original formula, but we’ve mixed things up a little bit. Kids are challenged to find the correct answer to a slew of arithmetic problems to stay safe during their turn. Dire consequences await those who choose poorly – their piece may be set back a couple steps, or they can even retreat all the way back to their home plate.
We use the Snakes and Ladders variation of the game for our activities on this page. Multiple versions of the board game are available for evaluating different kinds of math competencies, including addition and subtraction, making comparisons between numbers, identifying even and odd numbers, and solving arithmetic problems quickly through mental math.
Our collection of 2nd grade math playground games includes many other kinds of games here.
Your learners can try their hand with our fishing games. They’ll be reeling in the largest sea critters they can find – but in order to keep them, they’ll need to provide the correct answer to a specific arithmetic question. The goal of this challenge is to catch a set amount of fish. You can turn this into a sort of contest by setting a certain time for your students to finish the activity. This is where your students’ ability to perform mental calculations can really play a part.
We hope your students enjoy our diverse collection of 2nd grade math playground games. Feel free to incorporate these games into your next class activities and lesson plans as a way to keep your learners’ attention focused on studying well.
